Tonight with Trevor McDonald Monday 26th February: Speed Guns Misfiring

A motorist meets Mark Jordan to make claims that the speed guns police officers use to enforce speed laws are seriously flawed and prone to making errors. His views are backed up by people who have successfully challenged the device's readings in court.

One case that was challenged unsuccessfully was in Cardiff Crown Court. Paul Lee v Chief Constable by way of appeal. However, the prosecutions expert witness Mr. Garret(who is the British Director of the Speedscope Lasertech LTi 20-20 speed detection device company)stated in court that, the device gets it wrong 40 % of the time.

The case raised a few issues like the expert witness being impartial, the device used for collaboration being reliable amongst others. The defence had their own expert witness Dr.Clark (Europe's leading laser expert) who was totally ignored.

Both expert witness's have appeared in many appeal cases throughout the UK. Not surprisingly the Judiciary side with the prosecution to maintain the revenue being raised from such devices.
