There are traps around, I think they are more likely up in the beacons on a weekend from what I have seen but don't rule them out in the week. Mway bridges are a dead cert at some time or another and if you don't know, there is often a camera at the Severn tolls in the 50 limit leading up to them.
Pretty much agree with the road recommendations already mentioned here.
With regards to pubs and restuarants you cant go far wrong if you head into Caerleon (village just outside Newport). We've got more pubs that you can shake a stick at and The Priory Hotel/ Restaurant right on High Street. Excellent food and drink and a good atmosphere too. Enjoy!!

If you really only have an hour or so then go from Newport to Caerleon, then take minor road from Caerleon to Usk, through Usk - nice small town with shops/pubs etc and then take the B road from Usk to Chepstow..... Turn around and go back same way, or try VMAX on old M4 (M48) back to Newport.

....or maybe try The Carpenters, in Coed y Paen. Owned by a mate of mine who has turned the place around over the last year or two. Excellent food, menu changes regularly. Ask for Matt. (all round nice guy with a penchant for writing off Ducatis!!)

VMAX'ing on the M48
thats funny shady, was sure i saw you on chiswick bridge on fri afternoon, I was on my way to usk.
as an aside, the usk to chepstow road was where I learned true fear. i grew up on it, the standing record is 8minutes 50 from the bridge inn pub to the racecourse garage chepstow. That was when I was 17 and in a 998cc mini, I swear the RS4 wouldnt beat it now.

again , left the office in St.Pauls and headed down the M3 to HAmpshire first. Two spotted in one weekend
Yep, headed up through Abercon to Brecon then on a lovely bit to Builth Wells and back down to Abergavenny and home on the M4 again.
Was a bit overcast and there were some VERY slow muppet drivers as well. After they were dispatched with gay abandon (not in the homosexual sense, I must ad) we enjoyed a nice blat.
Mind you, my idea of a nice blat was 3 hours and 120ish miles, the Mrs thought it would be half hour or so. So apart from a bit of moaning on the way back, a nice little detour
Next time I'm in Wales, I'll try for a bit further North towards Snowdon and the Evo triangle.
cheers all for the input.
Here's an outline of me route www.wayfaring.com/maps/show/25510
