I remember seeing LuS1fer's Z06 and have also seen other cars that have a small number plate. If I recall coorrectly it is perfectly legal for imports to have this if they do not have a proper place to put the plate on.

My car is and import and as such it has no plave for it, just an ugly big bracket.

Where can I get a smaller plate made up and where is the legal link?

Cheers

Imports are governed by S.14A Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 providing an exemption for imports which have (a) no whole EU Type approval ie those requiring an SVA test and (b) no provision for mounting an EU size plate. What this means is that there should be some dedicated number plate mounting space that can't fit an EU plate, for example US cars have 12x6 plate inserts.

The permitted plate in those circumstances is a plate using the legal motorcycle size font only. It doesn't give you carte blanche to take the p*ss by fitting a tiny plate as many do.

You'd be surprised how many police officers have never heard of this so best to carry a copy of the section in the event of being pulled. If you need one, I can e-mail it to you, just send me your e-mail address in a PM.

Thank you very much for the info LuS1fer, I did print a copy of it I basically got a standard size british front number plate and cut the sides off leaving the numbers the correct size and leaving a margin of more than 13 mm. I wanted something othe than the square plate and also a bit more airflow, granted it sits lower in the bumper, but makes the car look a lot better.

Cheers
