Hi all,
Planning on coming home after 7yrs in Ireland. Having spent the last week or so looking at houses and areas with a span of West Newport in the east to Bridgend in the west and Lisvane in the North we have settled on Penarth, Wenvoe and Dinas. Wenvoe is slightly too quiet so will likely be dropped and Penarth looks to be too expensive for what we are looking for (4bed, period house with good garden for <£650k).
Any views on Dinas? I would think the old village is much more interesting as w looked at south of Cardiff road & Murch.
Opinions please (will likely need a rental property also given the challenges in getting a mortgage as an ex-pat).
Thanks,
Mark

Agree with the above - Dinas can become gridlocked as it is the favoured road to Barry and beyond ... which is part of the reason why we ended up in Wenvoe -
I think Wenvoe also has a lot more going for it - great pub and food, a Beefeater, it is close to Culver and the shops / food places etc so can nip out and get anything you want in 10 mins - great for the impromptu BBQ when the sun comes out There are also lots of walks with pubs !
If I had to go anywhere else it would likely also be Penarth ... but it is completely different to both Wenvoe and Dinas.. with Wenvoe being the most rural ..
Have you considered Sully?
Thanks all,
Firstly given that this is pistonheads TRY5T I was drooling over your Hurrucan parked outside the old custom house last week when we were over house hunting - absolutely stunning!
I will be working from home and therefore the commute on the Cardiff road is not an issue, I just need to be close to an airport for when life starts moving back to normal again. Main reason for Dinas over Wenvoe (and sully for that matter) is that we have a lovely big home here in Ireland but are very rural and the kids (10 & 13) are suffering from that and so we want access to kids their age. We had two viewings on a house in Wenvoe with a pool out the back ( you will know where it is) but there was, let me say a more of an older generation in this area. Sully also felt like we would be spending most of our lives in the car also.
I also have most of my family in penarth who have homes I can only dream of but having viewed a couple on Westbourne road they either are too much of a compromise from our position today or are too much of a stretch above the £650k max budget.
We concluded that Dinas village is the place to be as you can get more for your money and viewed a Victorian terrace there earlier this week before coming back to Ireland. Happy to be talked out of it to Wenvoe if you feel different!
As it looks we will need to rent first due to the ridiculous lending for non-UK residents so will have a chance to try it first. Any houses to rent in 3 months time that will accept 2 beagles (with an enhanced damage deposit to secure confidence)?

Dinas lovely. Sports, woods, 10 mins to Cardiff, 10 mins to sea, good school access...traffic not an issue if you whip over some smaller roads and avoid main Cardiff road. Good pubs in old village and great social scene.
Penarth. Elderly population, expensive houses, no detached houses at higher end and traffic a mare. Good schools, but you’re at £700 + and again, semi. Good sports clubs as Dinas.
Wenvoe and Sully...Wish Milton Keynes, no hub and just a rat run thoroughfare. Good luck with search.

The only big plus for me about Wenvoe having moved in 10 years go this month - is the convenience and access. You are close to the airport, M4 and large retail, but it is still relatively quiet.
We have looked at moving ourselves but my own view is that there is a lot of property which is overpriced and an adjustment is coming over the next 12 months. As such we decided to stay where we are and extend instead. My kids are only 4 and 6 but we already need more space !!
Hello all,
Thanks for all the replies and TRY5T I thought it was owned by a Welsh international rugby player ??.
I think Dinas is the place to be although we still have a soft spot for Wenvoe and have seen a (very) overpriced place with a pool there we think there is more life I Dinas as has been said. We
Like Penarth but the price premium and house downsize is offsetting the appeal - I cant afford Augusta road with the relatives unfortunately...
Sarnie is being a great help with mortgages as I am an expat but will duck in and ask questions when needed if that is okay?!

Hi Mark,
I am from dinas Powys originally but live in barry at the minute. Dinas Powys gets my vote. It's got so much going for it, choice of schools and a healthy choice of pubs and an ice restaurant. All depends on what you take into consideration. Three pubs should keep any bloke happy.
I'm also involved with the local garage which is a classic jaguar specialist.
If you have any questions on the area which you haven't found the answer to drop me a message.
Happy to help

Hello,
I too live in Dinas Powys currently, moved here 2 years ago from Barry and I am thoroughly enjoying my lifestyle here, especially in the area which you are looking. The local pub in the Village (The Star) is always busy, friendly and has the feeling of community, there are enough local shops for your usual needs and plenty of green areas for exercise / children. The local mechanic is a bonus as well as they are not only a Jaguar Specialist, they will tackle most things and are very approachable for bespoke work.
Regarding the traffic, the Cardiff Road can indeed get busy (very busy) and I wouldn't want to live directly on it. However, I feel it does move quickly enough and on the odd occasion I had to drive into Cardiff for work I was always back home within 35 minutes at rush hour times.
Dinas Village really is lovely and I spend a lot of time there. It just has a feel about the place which made me immediately feel comfortable. There are some lovely walks in and around the area too. It's the sort of area where everyone will say good morning to you in passing and everyone seems to respect each other. It's also (in my opinion) a very clean and well kept place, which was a big selling point for me when I moved to the area.
Good transport links as well to both Cardiff city and the airport with the train station at the bottom of the village.

Agreed, Dinas is a lovely place. I drive through it daily back and forth between Cardiff and Barry. I wouldn’t want to live on the main road either it can get quite busy, especially as they are laying new tarmac at the moment. It flows reasonably well at the moment as most people aren’t doing a commuteI too live in Dinas Powys currently, moved here 2 years ago from Barry and I am thoroughly enjoying my lifestyle here, especially in the area which you are looking. Sorry have been away for a while; really good to get some additional input to confirm that Dinas sounds like the right choice for us...
Pub and garage sounds great - I am limited by the crazy car costs here in ROI (paid €32k for my wife’s diesel qashqai 3 years ago...) so looking forward to getting something more interesting!
We seemed to have a run of houses hitting the market 2 months ago but it has slowed to a trickle and those that are left seem to be quite expensive for the village (and have been warned off the concrete ones on the common).
Sarnie on here is hopefully going to come good with the mortgage this week so we can be all guns blazing on the search.
Will for sure be in contact with those of you from or in the village to get that essential “inside knowledge “ on any purchases if that is okay

Short update - after much discussion over a Victorian property in the centre of Dinas that didn’t turn out to be what it looked like despite what the inventive EA insisted Also nothing meeting our needs in Wenvoe either...both markets have slowed considerably in the last 2 months.
We after a short visit at the weekend (luckily in between lockdowns!) we had an offer accepted on a property in St Fagans
I am sure I will be back with lots of questions in time!
Thanks for the input all - looking to get back to Wales

Nice, St Fagans is a very nice place - having played there for a number of years the cricket club is great socially even if you're not into Cricket!
Actually grew up in Dinas Powys and my Dad is still there. As others have noted a very nice place to live, regardless of the Cardiff Road traffic.
