Jebus. This is going to be bad what with the Severn tunnels being shut in the autumn.

I have to say I have no idea of the engineering involved or what is required.

How does it take this long to carry out the repairs other countries can rebuild roads and bridges within weeks in this country we have to suffer years or building work.
Not been to Germany in recent years, obviously. There are huge stretches of German Autobahn which have been blighted by roadworks, or just restricted due to degradation, for years.

why are one direction doing diversions ??!!Dunno. Bit of string question. Last time they shut that section they shifted people off a Coldra (jcn 24) and back on at Tredegar (jcn 28). Both ways. I thought I would be clever and use the heads of the valley to get to the Midlands but got caught by roadworks there at that time. So timed it so it would be open in the direction I needed only to get caught in the overruns from the nights works still shut after the claimed opening times. I accept that that happens.
However, if you can get off at 25a and back on at 26, that is a short hop.

Because of the never ending health and safety that has to be complied with so the fact is they'll probably only get around 4 hours of actual 'work' completed in a night.Bodged said:

As well as the lack of urgency to get anything completed....More time and money seem to go in to setting up the road furniture to facilitate "managing" (i.e.fleecing the motorist) the traffic flow than in getting the work completed...Late last year I had to go to Leeds and on the M1 between Donnington services and Leeds there were 3 long stretches of road works all coned off with average speed cameras @50mph that in total exceeded over 36 miles....in all of those roadworks I actually saw only one transit type tipper truck with 2 men handling shovels... that was it...no other work at all occurring yet thousands of motorists having to drive like brainless lemmings for mile after mile...
Fixed cost contracts are slowly strangling the UK...and many people are becoming so brainwashed that it seems a lot think the NSL is 50mph...
""The M4 is of vital importance to the Welsh economy and this maintenance to the Brynglas Tunnels forms part of our ongoing commitment to improving the motorway," said Mr Skates. "
What an idiot. Maintenance of what already exists isnt an improvement. What would be an improvement is blasting a damn great hole through the hillside so we could have 4 lanes both directions. And no silly speed limits

they still are a nightmare. last sunday morning the queue eastbound was from at least tredegar right to the tunnel and in recent past its been as far as down the spur almost to cardiff docks entrance. I go by bike whenever I can but that said, I'm not keen on that much filtering - its only a matter of time before someone pulls out in front of me.
50mph last night east bound at 11.00pm for absolutely no reason whatsoever other than some lardy, can't be arsed, operative hadn't reset the overhead signs on the various gantries...
It was the same last Sunday night and the Sunday before then....
It appears nobody is actually accountable for this moronic system that arbitrarily seems to active ...
Cynically you could argue it's about revenue as it's always either side of the tunnel and includes both gantries that are carrying cameras... but so late on a Sunday night the actual revenue will be low due to the low volume of traffic..
