Average speed cameras at Port Talbot
Discussion
Good question Charlie. The cameras going live on Fabian Way have had some press coverage but I have found nothing about the ones on the M4 being turned on. One PH'er asked this question on Saturday, by the sound of it he will know in about two weeks.
Best to assume they are to be on the safe side.

I don't think they are working yet, the cameras are not fitted to the gantry on the Margam side yet. The brackets are there but no cameras.
Cameras were put on the gantry's for a week, then taken down. Probably because the gantry is actually outside the 50mph limit. What are you smoking around in now Pugland? I have let my spots of you slip in the last year.

It doesn't actually say they have gone live, just due to go live in November.DHE said:

Puzzled with people slamming the brakes on at the end of the section (neath end), they are average and you have been passed two camera since the first one already!
Lights are not on in-front of the first camera heading east so I am guessing these are not working. As you have noticed in order to see the front number plate in roadworks there is always a flood light prior to the lights. The ones on the M4 at port talbot are still not switched on?
Any more guesses?

I've just treated it as if they are on for a few weeks now. Need to retrain myself to slow for the 50. I commute from Swansea to Pencoed and a few weeks ago it was a real pain in the arse, average cameras on Fabian Way, average cameras at Port Talbot, the contraflow by Margam and another at Sarn. What's the bet the ones on Fabian way stay after the uni is finished.

Don't recall ever seeing lights ahead of the ones on the A465. It'll depend on the tech in the cameras, most recent will be IR based and won't require illumination.Lights are not on in-front of the first camera heading east so I am guessing these are not working. Article on the BBC local news just now, missed the date they start issuing tickets, 9 or 19 Jan? Being tested at the moment? Not that I would risk it anyway.

I used to commute on the M4 and this area was horrendous for congestion on the westbound return home at peak time. We were often ON STOP in a queue at the J41 due to cameras prompting braking and the traffic joining from slip road.
These slip roads are very poor, too short, limited vision, feeding into busy traffic. There were MANY near misses caused by traffic joining at them due to their poor design and silly drivers.
Locals got up in arms when I said they should be closed as they liked to hop on and off for local trips - it's a MOTORWAY ffs!
Meant to allow better passing of the area. That area is a major bottleneck similar to Brynglas Tunnel area and ANY problems caused serious hold ups.
In my view the slip roads should be at Margam and Briton Ferry bridges leaving the town area clear. No real problems then for locals either other than having to go to the town's East or West sides to join M4.
