Any reasons I shouldn't?
I've heard it may not be the best but budget, distance to work and parking are all coming up right.

Had a walk around there yesterday evening and seemed alright to me, but hardly the best way to judge!

Bear in mind I'm in Aberbargoed now so roughness is relative!

Cardiff Caerau not Maesteg by the by.

Not the best of areas and some dubious people living in the area, but there are also some lovely people in the area.

Crime quite high so I would be investing in good security and alarms and would want off road parking. I bought a house in St Mellons which also has a bad rep but I made sure the security was sorted (including CCTV) and never really had problems (if you don't count a 9 year old stealing my valve caps for her bike smile )

I would strongly recommend you do a recce of the area at different times of day though. Some places take on a whole new perspective after dark

I live here, which part are you looking at?

Im at the newer houses on the site of the old hospital next to the A4232. Very, very quiet here (apart from the road!) and would say generally the same around the top end of heol trelai.

Bottom end near and around Amroth road - mostly full of dodgy people and dealers but nowhere near as bad as Ely 'proper'.

Oh, and there's a dodgy guy with a noisy golf R32 :-)

Asking for local advice on a local area on a regional forum........

Madness.

What WAS I thinking.

It wouldn't be my choice by a long chalk.
My father ran The Highfields Inn during the 80s and it was rough then.
However, like any area, you get a lot of nice honest folk spoilt by the w*nk*ers.
Have you considered Caerphilly? 10 miles from Cardiff but usually £100k less than just over the mountain.

Got to echo the comments. Wouldn't fancy living there if I could avoid it. Remember playing skittles in Ely Conservatives club (bit further into town) back in 2005 or so, came out to the stereo nicked from my old man's car (should have hung around for a bit longer - probably could have bought it back!) and the bandits were in steel cages.

I'd give serious thought to Caerphilly unless there's people you really want to avoid. Whilst there's some st areas (there's a big estate near Morrisons), there's also some pretty nice parts.

There is an estate in Caerphilly, just over the top of the mountain called Watford which is 60s semi-detached housing and that's quite nice. My wife just bought a house there. easy walking distance to the rail station and buses nearby.
Places to avoid are largely Lansbury Park and Churchill Park.

With a bit of money and that castle, Caerphilly could be so much more than it is.

Thanks for the replies, all. There is a house I've viewed there that I like, not done the whole asking the neighbours and local landlord what's what yet though.
