As per the title really where can I take a 16 year old to learn the basics of car control bearing in mind the RTA can apply to anywhere where there is public access i.e. supermarket car parks even when they are closed. I don't want to get in any legal trouble and I'd like somewhere where they can get up to 30mph and get the feel of the car and its controls without much risk of damage to me or TP's.

Preferably in S Wales near Cardiff (I believe many years ago you could go to llandow but probably no longer)

Any thoughts please?

Don't actually know to be fair. Failing that, get to know a friendly farmer.

It might be a little bit far from Cardiff but the disused quarries behind Trefil are excellent.

Heading East on the A465, at the tredegar roundabout take first exit and just follow the road. After the village the road will double back on itself towards the active quarry, the old road continues straight and you shouldn't see much traffic down there especially on a week day.
It's quite rought in places, but has little junctions and different gradients. I found it a nice area to explore when I was a teenager.

Some of it is actually on Google street view, but I'm pretty sure it's not officially a road...

took the 1 series to trefil a year or two ago and had great fun, though as you say most of it is rough and needs to be taken slowly, but there's nothing too serious [in the dry at least]. went right to the far end and saw a stunning, if rather toxic-looking, green lake. i've been back since then and the entrance has been locked. the sign wasn't clear but suggested it's only open on week days?

newport beach in pembrokeshire is open to cars all year round and is pretty spacious, just avoid bank holidays and you can splash around with the irish sea on all 4 sides of the car :]

pendine sands are now very sadly closed except for a few days of the year when they think they can get enough punters to pay to get on the sands. even then they limit how far you can go [but ignore the signs and just go for miles up the beach]. awesome.

i'd be delighted if someone told me that pendine had re-opened all year though. and gutted if they have closed newport beach recently, it surely will close some day soon.

You could try Llanedeyrn as well, that's where I found the last car I had stolen.

Thanks for the replies so far - has any one got access to a large yard where the gates can be closed and there is little risk of it being regarded as highway?

Hoping....

He could then put his car handling skills to the test when being chased by the Plod.

but these are public places as defined by the RTA The last thing my daughter will want is a conviction before she gets her license.

Are they?

We can drive untaxed vehicles, like shunt units, on our private industrial estate alhtough I suppose that insurance will be an issue.

I'm not sure an industrial estate is a great idea, you do get some weekend operating at some of them. But in a disused quarry or a large car park (Have you thought about Barry Island car park? - It's Massive and pretty deserted in the winter) I really can't imagine the police minding even if they showed up.

Another idea - There's an area right behind the Landow circuit which I went on years ago. Looking on Street View it appears it's actually an off road training area for Cats Eye motor school nowadays.

No idea if they own it or just make use of it, but the worse that can happen if they don't like you using it is a telling off, surely?

Why don't you just wait untill she's old enough. Even on private land you could still be liable if you knocked down a tresspasser, for example. IIRC she can apply for her licence before she's 17 so that it's with her on her birthday.

You can't at Llandow anymore! Had a confrontation with a local driving school there who use the area for underage driver training.

Unknown to me they rent the area I was teaching my little brother in. Had a right gobful off some jumped up little hitler for being there and apparently I was going to get charged for being there!!!

Whilst at the entrance it was clearly gated and signed by them, they failed to secure the other entrance by the tip, which I drove through to get there. Completely honest mistake and I stopped the car and took over as soon as I saw the other cars! They have since blocked the other entrance!

Anyway, the driving school is Cats Eyes of Llantwit Major, they do Under 17 driver training! If you end up with a fat man with a yellow 'tache and glasses, tell him the guy in the blue Focus would like an apology!

D'oh. Didn't see the post further up.
