After ditching my old computer and buying a new Windows 7 machine in December 2010, the damn thing now won't turn on. The button fires it into life and promptly cuts out within seconds. Pressing the button and keeping it pressed elicits a similar response so I don't think it's the on/off button itself. Luckily it failed on my birthday so all that money I got is going to be easy come, easy go....

Any recommendations for a local repairer to look at it for me? I suspect it may be the PSU but having already written what I know about computers on the back of a stamp, I'm not that confident in splurging for a new 550w PSU only to find that's not the problem (assuming I don't cock up fitting it as well). If it is the PSU, I'd also like to but a decent replacement if it is the PSU and I'm more likely to buy a Trabant than a Lotus with my level of skill.

It didn't help that my old computer was easily fixed with a new PSU which means I may be looking at the PSU by auto-suggestion....

This is the NEW computer. I gave that one to my ex and it's still going great. Typical!
MESH have gone bust so the warranty is useless.
I think I've ruled out the PSU anyway as disconnecting a lead from the motherboard (the little one not the big one) allows the fans and PSU to run ad infinitum but obviously sweet FA happens on the HDD.

I have had a suggestion to remove the CMOS battery but (a) can't find it and (b)the date and time have always been right before so i find it an unlikely suspect.

Let's face it, computers hate me.

Stay there while I kick myself. Just out of the nick of time, I'm peeved to say. I really appreciate the offer but dropped it off at Land of Computers about an hour ago! I don't like to try your wife's patience anyway....

I just hope the recommendation is a good one and it's nothing terminal.

Anyway, my washing machine flooded the kitchen last night. I don't suppose.... roflsmile

I did use Land of Computers in the end. They stuck in anew board, processor and one stick of memory for £160 which was OK. Annoyingly, they forgot to return the screen VGA adaptor so I had to go back down for that.

I was also told that the old HDD wouldn't work but thank the lord, it did.
