Steering wheel boss problems

I've just bought a Mountney steering wheel and boss,which despite saying 'all TVR' on the boss's box does not.It seems that it is not the no. of splines-36- but thatthe boss is too shallow,about 19 mm. would be right.I have a 1981 FHC 280i W-reg tamsin.Any ideas?I know that TVR's are often made up of different parts,and the supplier is also at a loss.Thanks !!!

The earlier cars used an ex-TR7 steering column, whereas the later Wedges used basically the SD1, Allegro or similar (height-adjustable) unit. Might be the length of the splined section was different?
