Does anyone know the most reliable and effective way to fix a dodgy fuel sender on a 350i? I ran out of gas with my fuel level just above the supposed reserve level. It moves up and down like it should, it's just not accurate.
Highly embarrassing being stuck inside a bus lane with no gas somewhere in Richmond. Good job it was a Saturday!

Carry a spare can of fuel.

My fuel gauge tends to be quite accurate strangely enough.
I still tend to bung some fuel in everytime I go out and tend to keep it topped up if I can. I also keep a can of fuel (as well as other essentials) in the back just in case!

What is unusual about this is that the gauge was over-reading. Wedge fuel senders are notoriously pessimistic and often show empty with at least 1/4 of a tank left. There was a Tech Tip in Sprint in ....wait for it while I dig it out.....Dec 95 from a chap called Mike Hurley (are you out there?)which suggested how to fix under-reading by lengthening the float arm. Of more interest to you it also explains how the sender works and how to remove it in more detail - but this is also well covered in Steve's Wedge bible.
