Should I be using traditional green coolant or a Tannin based additive and distilled water in my recently acquired 280i? I have the latter at present and it's looking pretty rusty...

A decent antifreeze is best.

"A decent antifreeze is best."

Yes Steve, it´s should be fine but in my 350i i´m using <20% antifreeze, Red Line 'Water Vetter' and a 74C thermostat to keep things on the cool side. What are you using in your race car Steve ?

Custom ally mega core rad built by the guys that make them for the Porker GT3 racers. OIl cooler fitted in the headlamp pod space.

82 degree stat. 30% anti-freeze and it gets to no more than 90 on a track with the oil at around 110 deg.

Did reduce the air intake size though as it was not getting warm on the trip down to the circuit.

Steve, should one use a fully synthetic oil when running the engine with a 74/82 stat on the street. Many short trips with "extra cold" engine can´t help cold were. What´s your opinion? Would that help some?

The stat only controls the engine temp if the temp is below the opening temp where it prevents the engine being further coooled by the rad and when the engine temp is above the opening temp where it will switch in the rad to prevent overheating.

As for running a synthetic because it is cold... I'm not really sure on that at all. A lighter synthetic will make the engine easier to start.

I would possibly block the rad so that the air flow is limited to help the engine get to temp more.
