The person who services your engine will know. And if they don't know, find someone else!

Tappets- some of the SEACS had adjustable tappets but they are noisy and need very frequent adjustment.
The reason for their use was that they allow a higher
reving 'near race' engine.
Most owners reverted to hydraulic because of the above.
Oil's - wow we could talk for a week on this subject...
the later engines - Griff & Chimp spefify Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w/50 - I think !
but the earlier V8 engines specified a non synthetic
mineral oil of around 20/50 or 15/50. Check you owners manual - reprints of the 400 manual are still available from the TVR cc.
The oil codes are best explained by :
i.e 20w/50
20 - means the oil drag when cold
50 - means the ultimate protection of the oil.
So a 5w/50 verses a 20w/50 would see the 5w/50 being the better oil - less drag, more power ! , same protection. Only 1 snag - on a old worn engine - more
oil consumption, emissions etc.
You really need to make you own choice.
If the engine has always run on Mobil 1 5w/50 and
does not smoke / use any oil - stick to it.
If it uses 20/50 and it uses oil - then again stick to
it - as it would just consume gallons of mobil 1 if you swapped.
Finally - dont ever mix mineral & synthetic.
Good luck
