Hello All
Well I've now taken the heads off and the thankfully it looks like the problem was the gaskets (see Puffin wedge thread).
So I'm in the process of having the heads skimmed and crack tested just to be sure and I'm fitting the composite type head gasket.
My question is I remember reading on some Rover V8 website that despite what the haynes /workshop manual says, the lower row of head bolts (ones underneath exhaust ports) should not be tightened fully but only to 20ft/lb or so. As when fully torqued they cause the head to clamp unevenly, apparently Rover deleted these bolts on the later serpentine V8's.
So has anyone else heard of this?

Ta Matt

Well, I have the same row of additional bolts on the Rover V8's in both of my race cars, and they're both new (one is a year old, the other 2 years old) serpentine engines.

I've always torqued them up the same as the other head bolts, because I'd never heard about this thing you're talking about. I can't see how it would happen though, as long as you tighten the head bolts in the correct order.

I've got a reply from RPi who say;
Ref. the bolts, no need to use them at all so when we fit these early heads we would fit the outer row of bolts but torque then so little that they would not interfere with the level fitting of the head.

Although there's big disclaimer thats comes with this info
but these guys know their stuff so I'll go ahead with it.
