Go for a 400. Mutts nutz for the price. Don't go feet first on one though get it checked. One of the best sound track as well. need a loud radio if you don't like the engine noise
A good site for wedges

The 400 is an animal. I swapped from a Chim 4.3 and I don't regret it. Much louder, and hairier. Remember the last 400s cost over 30k more than 10 years ago! They were and are great to drive. I love mine. Its a bigger beastie in so many ways than an S. (No disrespect to the S series cars)
Go for it. You won't regret it.

Just buy a 400 - the noise alone is sooo addictive.

Nothing else comes close for the money.

If you test drive one you will buy it !

No disrespect to S owners but compared to the V6s in particular the 400 is in a different league - much quicker and the suspension is far more capable - dont forget semi-trailers were dropped from the wedges long before the 400 came on the scene.

Look for (lots of regular)Service history, a straight chassis,a smooth engine that does not overheat, A1 electrics and good condition driveshaft UJs (with grease nipples!). Dont go OTT on low mileage cos they like to be driven and one that has been standing around for ages could well turn out to be trouble!

Go for the 400 if you can find a good one but bear in mind that a 390 or even a 350 is also significantly more potent than a V6S.

Having had a 390SE and a 500 Griff, I've recently bought a 400SE - well, a 460SE really as the engine has been upgraded. The looks aren't to everyone's taste but if you want to 'feel' as well as hear the aural experience that a V8 can give, go for it - they're mental!
