Having just bought a 350i I notice that one feel kind of sick by exhast fumes in it? (Hood up) Can´t be normal. Are all wedges like this or is there something wrong other than in concept if so? Like leaky boot lid? My pipes are unmodified all the way and do not leak. They go out through original hole in bumpers lower area slightly off centre to the right.

However, a "gallery" phot of David R:s white 350i show outlet positioned far to the right directly behind right rear wheel. Is this original or a private rebuild in an attempt to get the exhausts into the right side aerodynamic trailing vortices?? Does this fix work?

Kind regards Hans

I have not had any problems with this but I have noticed my exhaust protrudes past the bumper by at least 4 inches. My exhaust is not original (as most wedge exhausts as they have nearly all rotted) and is a stainless aftermarket by J & P. However, if I ride around with the roof down there is sometimes a bit of a smell of exhaust on my clothes as I think the fumes are swirled around in the airstream and then pulled back toward the cabin. Bit like riding a two stroke motorbike!!!

You certainly should not be getting exhaust fumes in the cabin.

I don't quite follow your descrption of the exhaust position. Your exhaust is on the right hand saide of the back of the car? There should be a cut-out in the moulding of the rear valance through which the pipes pass. This should determine the position of the pipes.

Perhaps there is a hole in the exhaust mid section, and fumes are coming up through the gear selector/handbrake gaitor?

My 400 is the same .. that characteristic Motorsport smell... super U and good quality motor oil fumes. Only with the roof down. My sxhaust is almost flush with the bumper.

Well, you could check if there is ANY hole at all under the hood for the cabin air inlet. In some cars, air is only cirulating in the cabin...

Rear light cluster sealed? Also boot lid not sealing? Think mine is leaking but it only afects the boot and contents.
Tried checking any bolts holes, or holes without bolts in the body and are they sealed properly?
Gear lever and handbrake area?
As for exit points for the exhaust it depends what year (to some extent) as to where they exit. Does it look untouched?

I'd be more inclined to check the condition of the exhaust manifold to system seals, as these are usually leaking. Also is any oil leaking from the rocker cover? As this will burn off and produce fumes, the old standard 'cork' gaskets are only good for one application and can be replaced with the latest rubber moulded parts.

My exhausts exit in front of the rear wheels and I can't say that I've ever been bothered by fumes in the cockpit. (which is more than can be said for people following me until my recent cam change)

I would agree with Matt. Any oil leak seems to find it's was onto the centrally mounted exhaust silencer. Try giving the pipes a good warm up with the bonnet open - and watch for the plume of oily haze.

I agree that a split gearlever gaiter is the likely problem. I fitted one from a Granada

Hear hear. My throat felt like Monica Lewinsky's until I replaced the split gaiter... on the car, obviously ;-)

When I use mine I generally come out smelling of Optimax + a dash of Mobil 1.

If you walk anywhere near the back of the car when it's running then you won't get the exhaust smell out of your cloths for weeks.

Can't say I'm aware of exhaust fumes in the cabin thou'

My 400 used to occasionally do this when the hood was down (low pressure in the cab!). Traced to holes around gromit in bulkhead and gear gaiter as entry points and source was manifolds needed to be skimmed and the mating to the centre pipes needed some gun gum!
