Double checked the timing today, but thought i would make a small adjustment. I was running at 3*btdc, so i retarded 1 degree at a time and the pinking has gone. Im now running at TDC, and temp and performance seem to be ok. I know timing marks have known to be way off on these motors so hopefully things will be ok. Should i leave this or try the other way and advance up to around 8* and work my my back, bearing in mind that it pinked at 4,3,2, degrees. Temp and performance were ok at those settings aswell, but i had the pinking. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO PLAYS WITH MY CAR IN THE COLD, AT NIGHT, WITH A LIGHT? Please say no!!!

Best way to check your timing marks is whip out no. 1 plug crank the engine over by hand until you feel it coming up to compression (thumb over plug hole) then get a dial gauge with a long probe poking into the hole, then SLOWLY crank the engine until you are satisfied the piston is exactly at the top. Be careful not to trap the probe between the piston and head as you'll be coming in at an angle. When its at TDC check your marks and adjust accordingly (Real steel sell timing mark tape for this purpose)

I thought everything had to be done when it is dark and cold outside: prime the oilpump (by removing distributor and give the pump a wizz), and set ignition timing (for me 8 BTDC is fine using 98RON unleaded)!
Glad I am not alone also.

Aye, piece of cake if you're left-handed, Matt! Also helps if you have 7-foot arms, so you can reach past the PAS pump.....
I'd pull all the plugs out, just to make it a bit easier.
I was out in the garage checking some wiring colours about 20 mins ago; do I qualify for a masochist award as well? (I'm rewiring the fuel injection and wanted to make sure I got the wires in the connectors in the same order as they already are... sad or what!)

Edit: I'm running about 8 degrees as well; and a head torch (especially one of the funky new slimline LED ones!) is worth its weight in gold...
