Serves me right for tinkering!

Had a new throttle cable fitted two weeks ago.
Didnt like the foot pedal position (too far below brake pedal) so adjusted on bulkhead fitting and throttle linkage end-so far so good! Also adjusted idle screw (2.5 turns from fully in)Then played with adjusting screw to butterfly linkage.
Problem 1.
butterfly valve sticks shut and i had to stamp on pedal to release it before i could start car!
Problem 2.
Missfire whenever foot is off the pedal but fine when foot on pedal!
Reset small adjust screw to butterfly valve/cable linkage and this prevents valve sticking.
Played around with throttle pot and missfire seems to have gone (subject to road test to work tommorrow!
Anyone tell me why valve should stick and what is correct setting for cable and tickover and throttle pot? Or is it all "white mans magic"
All help appreciated and needed!!!

Road test went well and im ded chuffed at sorting out missfire. Hooray for bible and this web site-cheers guys.
But i know that my tweeking was a bit hit and miss so if anyone knows the correct setting of little screw that seats the butterfly valve then let us know and also why its sticking shut if i back it right off.
Cheers Danny for the pot voltages, looks a sod to get my probes on the wires without cutting into the insulation though!

The butterfly when closed should allow at least a 2 thou feeler gauge top and bottom, it shouldn't be able to snap shut, once this is set use the throttle by-pass screw on throttle body to adjust tick over. to set throttle pot i use a thin probe multimeter ( .33 volts +/- .01 volts)

Dicky me old mucker: you should be easily able to get meter probes down the sides of the wires in the throttle pot connector. I have an assortment of probes and they all fit.
One thing: it's worth blipping the throttle a couple of times once you've set the pot - the pot doesn't always give exactly the same voltage every time, so aim for best average!
