Wege door opening .. mechanism woes

Argrrrrrrr .. Bloody things .. managed to get locked in the car in Safeways this morning ... went to open the drivers door and "ping" the connecting rod inside the door broke (again!!!)

The passenger door had gone months ago (my own fault i know)... Lucky enough in a fit of panic, i remembered to wind the window down and open it from the outside ..phew!
Another thing, it would be nice to replace the inside catch if possible. Has anyone investigated this ?

Now the point of this posting .. Does anyone know of anyone, or has anyone started to develop their own replacement door mechanisms for wedges... from what i have seen, mine has a steel rod covered with foam that holds the water close to the steel to help it rust! this is a bugger to adjust and replace
