Removing the Fuel tanks
Discussion
Having been nosing around under the car with a view to adjusting the body packing i was lucky enough to discover a nice crack in the rear of the chassis adjacent ot where the front of the axle frame mounts. I've dropped the axle out, which wasn't too bad but need to know if it is easy to get the r/hand petrol tank out?
has anybody any info they can donate please.
Cheers,
Mick

What suspension do you have? If it's the early trailing arm, you need to get that out of the way first. I think that the later A-frame type can be swung down out of the way.
I'm told that the tank retaining straps have a habit of snapping, and some tanks have been known to corrode through. Bit like any other car really!

Right, found it. 1987 350I. As its in sprints techie section am I allowed to nick it?
OK hope common sense prevails here. Article by Robin Fellows. Show a cut out near the tank neck and breather in the wheel arch. Big enough to let the tank out and taking pipes off. 3 inches or so.

Mine is an '87 350i with the a frame suspension. I have completely removed the entire axle/suspension unit. It was actually quite easy to do. It is the bit about if i need to cut any of the body to get the r/h tank out that is concerning me. I could get away with leaving it in, but i'm not too keen on welding right next to a petrol tank.
