On the 390, the indicator unit on the front driver's side stands out a centimeter or so more than the opposite one. I've took it to pieces and found a screw behind the indicator unit which prevents the unit sitting back into the bodywork fully. Can't see why the screw is there and it doesn't seem to be holding anything in, but it looks as though it has been left there for a reason. When I pluck up the courage, i'm going to remove it - assuming it isn't holding the rest of the car together. Anybody found similar?

Sounds very odd. What year is your 390? (Not that it is likely to be original.)

It is not normal but it might be screwed through into the bonnet nose to help keep it in place.

It's a 1986, but I think it's had front end work at some point. It does look out of place and isn't screwed in all the way. Top centimeter or two sticks out.

"Front end work" sounds ominous. Have you still got the rubber strip around the bumper?
You'll probably have to remove the bumper to find out what's happening which can be a pig of a job if the rubber strip is glued to both bumper and bodywork. From memory to remove the bumper you need to undo two retaining bolts in the nosecone and to get at these you need to remove the grill which necessitates removing the spoiler. Removing the spoiler should be straight forward (only two bolts per side ) but they usually get modified and have a rediculous number of rusty fixings.

Cheers guys. Rubber is still in place and the spoiler has been off fairly recently to have a bit of work so it shouldn't be too difficult to remove it. Having said that, I might just stick with the indicator as it is. Doesn't look too bad and unless you knew, probably wouldn't notice it.
