280i tranny???

what is the tranny in my 1985 280i US market??? is it a ford unit possably a t-4. i thought i heard it was the same as the pinto

Ford type E for the 4 speed.
Type N for the European only 5 speed.

Any idea how similar these two transmissions are? Just thinking in terms of a swap from the current dodgy type E to a type N I have sitting in my garage in need of a good home.
