Had a great run home from work yesterday, sun flicking through the trees, nice twisty clear open roads, was ace and when I got back the fuel gauge indicated that I had more fuel than when I left, Excellent

Sounds about right for a wedge, when I had mine I considered connecting the fuel gauge needle to the windscreen wipers as it had a very similar movement!

Maybe this would cure my moisture problem on the gauges

Did they fix the guage on later models ? (mine is late 89).

I ask because my guage seems very reliable. It's not particularly linear, but it is very consistent and predictable.

This would be extra dampening to stop the needle bouncing around so much?
