I'm baffled - I'm currently looking at options to replace my rear shox and having liked AVOs on my previous 400 was surprised to see that their catalogue lists "Tasmins excluding SEAC models". I always thought all wedges used the same rear shox - obviously not the case but when I asked the helpful chap at Merlin Motorsport (Castle Coombe)if he could find out what the difference was the answer came back that AVO could supply 2 different types of rear shox - depending whether or not my SEAC had coil-over front shox or not. Things got more confusimg when looking at the Spax catalogue that lists a coil-over front shock for SEACs too.

I did not think any wedges were built with coil-over front suspension although I am aware of the Tower View conversion. Can anyone explain this - surely theres more to a coil-over conversion than bolting on a Spax spring and damper unit!

Also interested in anyone's opinions on the best shocks to use - I'm going to stick with standard springs for road useability but want easy adjustment for Track days - re-building the old Konis is probably not on the cards.

Any ideas appreciated.........

Mine has AVO's all around. Front's are standard but rears a bit different. The rears are adjustble.
Never had a car that sticks so much to the tarmac. Nearly as good as my Vixen

I've had AVOs and they suit the Wedge but the Gaz ones are better. As for the SEAC stuff... they may have done it for the race cars only. I know that when the Tazzie racers were looking at this I seem to remember this coming up. Never seen it on a road car though.

There were a few road SEACs with front coil over, full rose joint etc, they came out of the factory like this, probably only 5 though, the chassis was heavily modified / built differently to accommodate the coil over set up. Some of the "standard" type have been modified by specialists.
I like the idea of ride height adjustment on the front !
I guess the SEACs had different spring rates, and shocks, but doesn't mean to say that you can't fit 400 spec, i'm sure the chassis spec is the same, might even improve things ?

BRM BRM - did you change to AVO's.

How are they .. better.

How much did they cost ?

Anyone ever tried Nitrons ?

My SEAC has a rose jointed & adjustable bottom
link on the front suspension but it has not
got coil overs...

My 87 350I is fitted with adjustable AVO's all round. It handles like a go kart. I can highly reccomend them.
Try 'Wedge Automotive'.

Wedge Automotive (aka RT Racing) dont do AVOs anymore, Richard is now selling "Redline" Shox instead that he assures me are even better than AVOs. I ordered a set 2 weeks ago and having received the fronts in good time am still waiting for the rears - unusual for Wedge to take so long but he is apparently waiting imminent delivery of new stock. I'm not in any rush as I'm waiting for my new Alloy radiator to be built - collecting next weekend!

The fronts look good quality but I will be fitting them all together and will report back afterwards. I would recommend AVOs from previous experience but Richard has not sold me a lemon yet so thought I'd try his new ones. Costs are similar to AVOs, (marginally more expensive), full details in his catalogue. If you fancy AVOs, Merlin Motorsport at Castle Coombe can supply them mail order - 01249 782101.

You'll be pleased to know while you wait that Wedges Redline rear shocks also look really good quality too. Not fitted yet for reasons you may have seen in my recent post!

like multiple choice questions "some of the above..."

I have AVOs on the front of the 450 and have been very happy with them in the (roughly) three years they have been there.

I now have GAZ on the rear and the limited amount of use they have had so far makes me pretty positive about them as well (obviously Steve has had them longer).

As I have a non-functioning engine at the moment none of the shocks are likely to get too much use in the next month or so :-(
