Not overly helpful this probably, due to my experience is with a V8, however principle may be the same though.
On a V8 it is doable, the hard part is the bolts that were hidden by the front cross member. The rears (bell housing) need a thinner socket so the grinder was used to reduce the dia of an old socket.
The engine will probably need to be lifted, to facilitate removal, as the oil strainer was a bit of a bugger.
Not sure what you want to do, if it is anything other than a gasket change, engine removal would be my preferred thing. Having spent days battling gearbox removal to get to the rear oil seal, and other things.
