LT77 Output Oil Seal moved
Discussion
So, whilst still trying to iron out all of the bug in my 350i, I have found yet another unusual problem. I noticed some oil on the garage floor and it seems that the new gearbox output shaft seal I fitted has managed to work its way backwards to the point that oil can leak past it! I don't remember what it was like when I fitted it but I don't recall it being too difficult, and it was definitely installed properly so I suspect it was just not a very tight fit. I have noticed that a lot of aftermarket seals and other parts are an incredibly poor fit and I suspect that is what has caused the problem.
The pain is I need to remove the exhaust so I can remove the prop shaft to replace the seal of course, which means getting it up onto ramps for the umpteenth time!
Has anyone got any recommendations for a good replacement seal?

You have me wondering now as I replaced the same seal on a Jaguar version of the lt77.
Unless you buy new old stock I think most aftermarket parts are lacking quality these days. Possibly with yourself, once you remove the damaged seal, upon reassembly use an additional gasket seal, not silicone but the rubberised stuff modern cars have applied to seal the sump. Make sure everything is über clean before application and that should stop any new output seal moving.

I did install the seal with sone gasket sealant but when I pulled the seal out, the sealant was not set as I was expecting but still runny. I wonder if it lubricated the seal rather than stuck it in place and allowed it to move under vibration? I am going to fit a replacement totally dry with maybe a small bead of sealant around the outer edge once it is seated properly.
