280i PAS pipe sourcing (or alternatives)
Discussion
Hello all
The metal PAS pipe on my 1983 280i is corroded beyond repair. Sad.
From what I understand, the rack is from a cortina Mk 4/5 - but i'm having two issues:
- I'm not sure if there was any custom work done on the rack
- I'm struggling to find a place that has even any stock parts for this rack.
Anyone have any idea where I could source them/any spare bits lying around?
IF I can't sort this out - what are the best alternatives that I can swap to relatively cost effectively?
Pictures available on demand.
Best,
J

Not sure where you are based I have a local company called PIRTEK, that will make any hose pipe to your pattern. They are all over the place.

If function is all you require a flex hose will do the job.
A steel pipe is cheaper on a production line but not as a custom make.

I’m glad you’ve said that, as I’m having the same issue, abelt on a Citroen. I was wondering if a silicone hose would do considering the pressure through it should be quite low?A steel pipe is cheaper on a production line but not as a custom make.
Steve
What sort of pressure does a PAS system run at?

PAS flexi hose would be reinforced & multi layered, I would have thought that type of hose you mention would not be a good option.
I replaced my belt-driven pump with a Saxo one, using the original hoses. It must be a lot less than the old belt-driven one as the steering has weighted up somewhat.
At the time of my swap, I think that the Saxo pump runs between 80-85 bar, the pump on a C4 goes up to 110 bar?

I think your best option is to have it made. As I have found in the past with my previous kit cars bits are scarce now as modern scrap methods, tend to be take the high value easy to sell part, then crush, gone for good.
Did you try the company mentioned?
You could also ring these:

They may have a second user part from an old refurb project? or perhaps make a pattern part for you?

I am not sure if you are just calling them (Pirtek), they will probably just say no sorry because it is not off a machine / Forklift, etc. As soon as you mention TVR PAS, you have lost their attention. I find it better to stand in the shop with the part. Normally there will be a helpful chap/ess who knows their stuff and pull something out of a bottom drawer. My local one did that for a radiator fitting, which was an awkward shape.
The fittings will be standard imperial pipe fittings I suspect the hardline dia will be standard as well.
As mentioned previously, if they are truly unable to make a hardline, they should be able to knock up a Flexi replacement. or identify the thread type for you.
Once you are armed with the thread type, there are sellers on ebay that will make it for you.
For example:

I have read people ripping out and starting again, there are threads on here.
Also have a look here for another supplier if still in business (P57):

Corsa electric conversion has also been done and talked about.

Excellent, thank you for all of the info.
As I just need to chop off the end, am I right in thinking that this should fit?

Hi,
I suspect that would not work, unless you intend using the pipe section only and also very expensive.
Looking at your previous picture one end will be female threaded, the other end male, both ends of the pipe would most likely need to be swaged (brake line like).
You could probably buy a length of pipe a bending tool and various assorted fittings for less.
Did you go to a Pirtec shop in person?
