FLYWHEEL DOWELS !! Help
Discussion
Hi all,
I recently had my 350i flywheel face skimmed and when I took it to the machine shop it had the three clutch locating dowels still in it as I couldn't remove them myself. I left it with the machine shop guys to remove them for me and skim the flywheel.
They skimmed the face but told me they could only remove one of the dowels and so cut the other two off and then skimmed the flywheel face leaving the two dowels in the wheel and flush with the newly skimmed face.
Obviously I now have the issue of removing the two dowel sections in the face of the wheel and I'm not sure how this csn be done ? ?
The machine guy suggested getting them spark eroded? Which I believe is an EDM process? But no doubt this wont be cheap?.
Any ideas guys that could help me?
Cheers

Yeh, I'm surprised they couldn't do it as there a long standing firm with all the kit to do machining work.
I would gave proffered to get a call to say they couldn't remove them and they I could gave had it back and possibly got them removed elsewhere, but its geen done now and I am where I am with it so need a solution to get the two dowels out.
Cheers

If you can get the pitch circle diameter of the dowels off another flywheel or better still off the pressure plate this can be transferred onto some scrap material like plastic or aluminum to replicate the dowel positions then drill the back of them and pin punch them out. Whereabouts are you?
Dowels are usually only case hardened so if you see where they are it should be possible to drill down the middle and hopefully feel when you are through to the end of the dowel, then tap through then screw a screw through to extract.
If 6mm dowel drill 4.2 and tap M5.
As others have said pretty shoddy of the machine shop.

Ordered a new set of 3 dowels which should be with my by the weekend so will have them for reference as needs be. Like the idea of drilling and tapping the section of dowels in the wheel and extracting that way so could possibly do that. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm in Coventry.
Cheers again.
