Hi All,
My early 350i has a smell of fuel. I’m working through the usual places but noticed that there is no rubber seal on the fuel filler cap. Should there be one?
Search tells me it’s a TR7 cap, but searching for those comes up with something looking different - maybe TR7 ones changed through the years?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes there should be a seal. Mine fell apart so I made a new one out of 2mm cork gasket sheet. You can buy the seal on line but the one I got was too thick so I couldn't screw the filler cap on properly. The homemade one works fine and stops the petrol smell. Also do check the condition of the hose from filler cap to tank. This can perish or work loose. Take the interior trim off to inspect. Cheers.

My garage is quite confined and it does get a bad smell of fuel out of the breather which comes out behind the passenger rear wheel. I attach a pipe to the outside world when I leave it in there... in case it helps...

Thanks all. Very helpful. I’m going to make a sealing ring from 2mm cork gasket and see how I get on….
