Just started some winter work on the 350i.
The gear lever gaiter has suffered over the years and is split and gone hard and brittle.

Having mooched around on here and Google and usual places. I failed to find a part that remotely matches the original part (excluding Racetech). Seems to be a Ford part - Sierra, Taunus, P100, etc.

Has anyone got words of wisdom as an alternative, that is not silly money? I have noted that a Land Rover has been used upside down, but even these seem to be hard to find.

I have come across these...

https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/universal-convoluted... (probably too high and restricted movement).
and...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B087RGT61P/ref... (may have restricted movement).

The problems are:

Covering the hole in the bodywork.
Height of the gaiter, against gear lever height.
Gearstick restriction in movement (reverse to fifth).

Many thanks

This is a Sierra gaiter, about 8mm shorter than one I have from an S Series (it's about 152mm front to back) in very good condition with no tears splits or abrasions.
£20 inc postage if it's any use to you.

Use my 'alternative gaiter solution' and fit a Freelander one upside down. Seals better around the tub. Frees up space under leather gaiter so it fits better.

Having worked in Injection moulding and compression rubber moulding, I find prices for new rubber bits amazing, perhaps I live in the past too much smile.
Like all things there were plenty about back in the day, the older the vehicle gets the harder it becomes to find parts

@phillpot thanks for the offer I will have a think on that, and let you know.

@mk1fan I did come across your solution:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

It seems to be a good solution, however, I see the Sierra one filling out the outer leather gaiter, to stop It from collapsing.

Is the Freelander this one? - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222682678645?fits=Model...

Many thanks

Mike thanks for the gaiter offer.
After consideration, I think I will have a look at the inverted solution in the first instance, as that may help with the gearstick movement and subsequent gear selection (potential gaiter in a gaiter bunching). This along with tightening the very loose bolts to the remote housing (bolts less than finger tight).

If this proves to be a no-go and you still have the item I may well take you up on the offer.

Many thanks.

No problem, give me a shout if you decide you do want it.

Looking at the Freelander one, is that a huge hole in the top?

On my old 350i I replaced the rubber gaiter with one for an early VW Transporter. With a small amount of trimming it fitted fine.

Indeed it does. The shape must be a BL 'standard' as the serendipitous sizing is utilised here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Does that big hole seal OK against the metal of the stick, otherwise you'll get the odd whiff of fumes escaping upwards.

Well the gaiter turned up.
Not at this stage yet, got loads to do before this is revisited.

The lip on this kinda grips into the hole:

This is it fitted:

As an alternative, this is worth a look. top part from the old one possibly glued in:
