Thinking of fitting a pre pump filter.
Question - is it fitted pre swirl pot or post swirl pot pre pump?

I fitted one just before the pump on the basis that anything corroding inside the swirl pot couldn't get into the pump. My thinking was to add a mesh filter to stop particles getting into the pump and there is obviously a finer one after the pump. I fitted one of these sytec units which are a bit over the top and you need to make sure you select the correct inlet/outlet size and filter type when ordering.

I think other people have done a similar exercise as the filters inside the swirl pot used to allegedly fall apart over time, but when I cut my swirl pot in half to save the bother and remove it, there wasn't any filter there...

Thanks for that
My reason for asking was the fact that the swirl pot is reservoir of fuel for the pump to access, and may be having a filter after the pot would in some way potentially starve the pump?

On the three Wedges I've had, the swirl pot has a chunky 1" pipe feeding it from both tanks. The pipe is short, thick and tricky to get at. If you wanted to put a filter pre swirl then you would need two. The added complication is the swirl pot has a breather that exits at the top of one of the tanks. The suction head loss over the filters may well be sufficient that the pump pulls air in via the breather rather than from the tank bottoms.

I fitted a "Bullet" filter between the swirlpot outlet and the fuel pump on my 400SE. You need the version with a mesh strainer. The fibre filter version restricts fuel flow near full power when the petrol tank level is low (abt 30-40%).
I also fitted a ball valve before the filter so fuel could be shut off when the filter needed to be inspected/cleaned.

I have a sytec fitted by a previous owner. However the idiot put a fine filter in it, which after a few years led to an interesting failure/cutting out mode at wide open throttle - eg when going for an overtake!

Now have a 100 micron mesh element fitted, and it works a treat. Every so often 20k miles or so, clamp the hoses and open it up, then wash the crud off the mesh, and reinstall.

Thanks for the advice
Does the filter need to be held vertically to purge air or is it self purging?

Mine is horizontal.

My filter is horizontal and has worked fine in that position for over 15 years
