350i LT77 gearbox drain plug sealing washer
Discussion
Hi everyone I am just about to replace the gearbox oil with Molyslip and 5w40 oil.
The oil in the box is way too thick to the point of being unable to move from 1st to 2nd when cold.
The oil has only been in for a few hundred miles and looked in a sorry state when drained, a few filings on the magnet not that bad I would say.
My question is there appears to be a number of washers to use under the drain plug head.
I have come across a couple of different types..
A plain copper one (FTC4112) and another that appears to be a crush type with a rubber inlay (FRC7064A).
What experiences have people had with either type?
Does it depend on the gearbox suffix letter, as to which one to use?
Again less than a quid for a washer down to 28p in one case, then 5 quid postage the part would go into a standard envelope and second class post. Local factors were totally disinterested

Hi Adam the gearbox was empty when I got the car after I checked it. I topped it up last summer to drive it. No flush i will put it in and see how the boat rocks.
If I need to drain and refill again next summer, thats no problem. Assuming the oil and Molyslip does its job.
The original washer is beyond redemption.

Yep in the car no leaks. I always check fluid levels on car purchase. Went to top up the box and axle, axle OK, but the gearbox took over 2 litres. I drained out about the right amount on Saturday. Just waiting for the copper washer to turn up in the post, so as I can refill, and see how it goes.
I'd recommend the flushing first, you put the rear of the car up on axle stands so the wheels can turn, then fill with atf+white spirit 50:50. Run the engine in gear for 10 minutes on idle and go through the gears.

There is no load on the box so it doesn't cause any damage. Output shaft needs to turn to engage the oil pump in the box and circulate cleaning through that.
Drain it and then refill with the good stuff. You might be surprised how much crud comes out.
But that's a mystery, usually the box drips a bit from somewhere.

Well decided to just drain and refil (thanks for advice Adam) as I think the gearbox is not in best fettle in any case.
Ran the car for a bit on axle stands whilst in gear.
Anyhow the first run out was much better, in that I could go from 1st to 2nd, whereas I couldn't previously. I have only done a few miles to run up hot, and it is very much improved, lets see how it goes med / long term.
I will tax it May 1st and drive a bit more, and report back If I remember once it has a few more miles on it.
Just to recap it must have had some remnants of previous top-up oil + 5W 40 fully synthetic and half tube of Molyslip.

Well after a few more local miles under my belt the gearbox does seem a lot better in all gears. The first few, 1st to second gear changes have to be deliberately slow, I have a couple of short junctions to get out of the estate. After that all is good, quick shift changes are no problem.
