What should be under the carpets?

I've just removed the carpets from my 400SE to clean them(I've had the car twenty years and just got round to this). There is nothing under the carpets except the glassfibre body, but there are signs in places that something was originally stuck to the floor. Some kind of matting or sound proofing. Is there meant to be something under the carpets in a wedge that has been stripped out of mine or has someone previously tried to add something and given up?

We’re renovating my sons 390 interior and his is the same carpeted directly over the fibreglass

Mine had particle foam everywhere which was badly degraded. I replaced it all with foam underlay offcuts glued in with automotive carpet over the top. Result is much more pleasant feel and no drumming through the carpet which sounds and feels a bit cheap to me.

You may of had some sound insulation from road noise under the carpet...the original carpet may of got wet at some point and been ripped out..if it doesn't bother you then I would worry....or if it does...then

However you need to stick the carpet back on to it, if you use anything with foam then eventually it will deteriorate and the carpet will move about...you can see it in some cars where the footwell drivers carpet looks a bit baggy...

...and make sure you get the high temp contact adhesive if you do go that way, the normal stuff will go soft in the heat.

As above...you can use AF178 adhesive...be careful though as its bloody sticky and has no forgiveness if you get it wrong...

My 390 just has carpets glued directly to the fibreglass. Whatever glue they used is extremely strong as I can't lift any apart from the run under the seats which is not glued down.

Mine had soggy underlay. I now have this in the car as it does not absorb water.
