The CSI is non polarised from what i remember. Cold starting difficulties are more often a case of too rich than too lean though. The ecu gives a priming pulse on each injector on powerup, so to test if the problem is from being too lean, you can key the ignition on and off 5 or 6 times before engaging the starter motor to see if that helps. If it doesn't then; too rich or ignition

HiMy 1987 350i would eventually take over a minute to catch
I did try to diagnose this problem with continuity and resistance values of all the pins from the ECU...AFM...the coolant temperature sender and thermotime switch operation...I also checked rotor arm..and dizzy cap for cracks or shorting...Earths were cleaned..along with all connections ...again ECU..AFM..when I tested the cold start it was dead and nothing was coming out of it although it had a live and negative feed!..
I also changed the alternator to a new one and renewed the year old plug leads and king lead......I removed the cold start injector and squirted some fuel into the plenum...she fired up straight away...she used to take a whole minute of cranking alternately for a minute and half.
At the last MOT it was realised that she was running very lean so the mixture was reset...made no difference to the starting issue...so I chopped off a cigarette lighter plug to an engine inspection lamp and just connected them to the cold start injector wires..it was live to live and earth to earth...Put the connector in pre-start tun on ignition and crank...count to 3 and remove it...happy days...
