400SE Power Steering Hose orientation
Discussion
Hi all, bit of an odd one one of us businesses coming in here asking for advice, but I'm a bit stuck for ideas!
Basically we have a 1990 400SE for a chassis refurb. That's all done, just putting it all back together but have an issue with the PAS. When the engine is running, the steering wheel goes nuts if you apply a tiny amount of pressure to it and operate the torsion bar in the pinion. Suggests a hose is on the wrong way around somewhere. To compound matters, the rack was overhauled by a specialist we use, and re-piped. I'm not doubting him for one minute, and to be honest I'd rather that I've made a mistake myself than anyone else. I prefer to blame myself than others! However, something, somewhere is amiss.
What I was hoping is that someone might be able to look at their mechanically-similar car (later rack, I thought Supra judging by the 'Bible', but rack guy seems to think it's SD1?) and follow the two rubber hoses from the pump/res to the pinion block, and note which ends go where. Likewise, the two solid pipes which go from the rack body to the pinion, I need starting points and finishing points. There is a fifth pipe, but it's just a breather that runs from side to side across the rack body.
Issue is that I took pictures before it came apart, and none of the images actually highlight the areas I need to see. From all my pictures, it looks like it's back together the way it was before it came apart, but it's clearly not happy. the rack has been run on a rig and tested, and the PAS worked fine when the car arrived.
Bit of a ballache, but every now and then, something like this happens. Just trying to figure it out so I can get the chap his car back and let him enjoy the weather! Would appreciate any help anyone could provide.
Thanks

Hi Glen,
That's cool. It was really a case of trying to suss out if these pipes are on the wrong way somehow, because if they are there's no point proceeding.
I've pretty much narrowed it down to the solid pipes from rack to pinion. The pressure/return hoses can't be the wrong way around, because they're different sizes. Now it's a case of trying to figure out whether they're round the wrong way, or something is up with the rack.
Still none the wiser though, so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
