No oil pressure after rebuild

Errrr... not good! I assume you turned it over without the plugs in too?
No pressure could be attributable to any number of things. Is the oil pump working? Have you got the right bearings in the mains/ends? Did you have the crank reground? Are the galleys blocked? Is it leaking out elsewhere? Is the sender fcuked?
As a quick test take the end off the pressure sensor (capillary type?) and see if oil squirts out, at least that'll rule out the pump.
Without knowing more about your rebuild the list is endless!!

V8? Did you remember to prime the oil pump? The pre-serpentine V8s don't self prime. DON'T keep cranking it dry, you will shortly need another engine rebuild!

To be honest this isn't unusual, there are acouple of things you can do; pack the pump gear cavity (with the gears in it) with vaseline as this gives the pump something to work with. Also make sure the remote oil filter is full and have both the remote hoses off and fill them up with an oil can. You won't fill the return hose but pump some down there for good measure. Then spin her over without plugs on full throttle for 20 second bursts so giving the cam time to cool down between cranking without oil, you should be able (everything else being well) to get the oil pressure warning light to go out and you can then start the engine

Would not recommend Vaseline to prime your oil pump, prefer something like Torco build lub or something else designed for the job. Can you back prime it by feeding oil from pump can down the oil pressure relief assembly like we do on A-series Minis ???
Isn't there a problem with oil pump drives on the original Rover V8 ? As mine is pre SDI it has the worst of all permutations, but seem to remember something about it. Will check the books tonight.

By the way, would recommend applying some build lub or somesuch on rocker gear and some oil down bores as well.
Cam is a bit more tricky, but you did smother it in build lub when you put it all back together didn't you........
Only problems with cranking on starter for long periods are the obvious ones of overheated starter motor and kippered batteries. The MG still has two 6 volts so I normally connect an auxillary battery for this type of operation.

Hang on a minute there's nothing wrong with using vaseline as that what it reccommends doing in the Rover manual for a start and it dissolves / melts in engine oil in any case and this 'vaseline contaminated' oil should only be in the engine for the running in period as well. And Vaselines' main ingredient ? Petrol, which will be mixed with engine oil in any case in the form of blow-by past your new un-bedded in piston rings. So it really will make very little difference.
As you can guess the last 3 rebuilds I've done all used vaseline with no problems.
