rattlely gearstick ??????
Discussion
The bias springs may be the cause, but they're not specifically there to stop the rattle. There is a small (but bloody stiff!) spring and a nylon plunger that fit into a drilling in the 'ball' at the root of the shift lever and bear against the 'cup' that the lever sits in. If that spring fell out, it would rattle like hell.
My 390 had worn bushes around the linkage tying the shift to the gearbox; I only found a suitable replacement once I'd put the box back in the car... typical. However, I slid some copper shims in around the linkage and that improved the shift no end, although it's still not spectacularly quick. As if it ever was... ;-)
