LT77 Gearbox - What Oil?
Discussion
I have heard this stuff is supposed to be the mut's nuts for the LT77. Has anyone any experience of it and how it compares to a semi-synthetic 75w/90?

Brilliant stuff, takes away all the notchiness, the gear changes are slicker….IMO, well worth the extra cost

I found it coped better with track days as well. Synchro crunch when very hot without it and not afterwards.

I get occasional synchro "notchiness" from 4th to 5th when very hot and high revs, so this is good to hear. Thanks. Is it possible to drain the gearbox without a ramp, and am I going to need one of those big syringe things?
I got this, works a treat;

Changing the g/b oil w/o a ramp is very tricky, so no doubt fun......(filler plug out first, takes a 1/2" socket drive)
Txs fo posting this, you are going to cost me another £55, damn you

Pretty much as Bobby says. I think BL / Rover specified ATF to overcome cold crunching, without much thought for the longevity of the box. I've used SMX, engine oil mix, and currently redline MTF. The Castrol was prone to allowing crunching when cold, but easily overcome by shifting directly up the box from 1 to 3 until warm. Redline seems fine at all temps. I think you need to avoid anything rated GL5 because of the greater content of additives that can be harmful to the bronze components in the LT77 - i.e. GL4 is ok.

If that is what a decent one costs, I might as well pay a garage half an hour's labour. After I've changed the oil it will just sit in the garage cluttering up space for a couple of years until the next change, and then I won't be able to find it
Thanks for the tips gents

Next question then; the Steve Heath book states the oil capacity of the LT77 as 2.5pts (1.42lts), but on the back of the Difflock bottle is says 3lts, over twice as much. So which is it?

Mobil one (think 0w30) and molyslip is fine for me since a couple of years. Less noise, no issues during trackdays, and shifting when cold is nearly as good as when at full operation temperature.
Used engine oil for many years, and was then the box was a little bit noisy, but had to avoid second gear until warmed up..., much better since, no gearbox noises at all.
If I didn't like it, would go for MTF next time, but it looks that I will stick with this for many miles/years to come.

I changed mine as part of full service last year and not because of any issues. I chose this after reading few threads on here and it was a choice between the difflock and the mobil 1 and molyslip option.Certainly nice smooth through the gear changes but as i said i didn't have issues anyway.
Whichever way you go its is recommended to flush out after dropping the old oil with a mixture of engine oil and white spirit/paraffin.

Brilliant stuff mate. Not the cheapest but transformed my gearbox. Cold gear changes from 1st to 2nd used to be terrible. Very slick now. Karl.
I bought 3 and just check in garage, i actually opened the 3rd litre but used very little out of it.
If you get 3 you always have enough for top up ups if ever required as at the price you won't be changing too often.
Can't recommend enough the flushing out though, surprising how much crap you get out, especially if when you remove the magnetic drain plug it is coated in metal filings.
