Hi All

I have started doing a bit of research prior to starting a full restoration of my 350i.

Most of the work I will undertake myself but chassis and respray are not in that list. It looks like Southways Automotive are a good bet for the chassis. I've seen some of their work and i know that Matt-Man had his chassis refurbished there and he seemed very happy.

Respray is a different matter. I feel the need to go somewhere where they are familiar with prepping and spraying fibreglass not metal. I have been to see a local place. The bloke who owns it is actually a customer of mine. He looked over the car on Friday and told me that the condition overall is very good. There are three areas where there is cracking in the gel coat. One is stress from the light pod and the other two are impact damage. There are also a few knocks on the front air dam. But he reckoned it would cost about £6k.

I don't mind spending the money getting it done and I'm not worried about the value of the car as I want to get a proper car out at the end of it. But that doesn't mean I want to spend money needlessly.

Can I have some thoughts please. Particularly from anyone who has had a respray- was it a good respray? Was the prep good or just OK? Is the respray holdiong up well?

It reminds me of a Volvo V70 I looked at buying recently. It had clearly had a dent in the passenger front door which had been badly prepped but quite nicely sprayed. The dealer told me that I should expect a few knocks and I would only see the poor bodywork when I washed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say I didn't purchase the car!!

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Adi

I just had car my resprayed it cost £1200. It was a good job but not entirely perfect. It will have to go back for some touch ups - something I can do myself. It's a question of what you want and finding the best people to do it and of course how much you are prepared to pay. £6k IMO is an over the top price. I would budget tops for about £2.5k if you want a stonking hassle free job without you having to touch the car before or after. I saved money because I stripped my car down and will re-fit it again when I am ready...

£2.5k was about what I expected. Or maybe a little more.

I have a friend with a Cerb. He had his resprayed and I think that was about £2200. But the car was in good nick apart from a lot of small stone chips. I need to catch up with him to see how he feels about it now as it was done about 2 years ago.

I plan to do all the strip down myself and I'm prepared to do a lot of the prep work. I have a pretty good eye so that should minimise any other prep work which the sprayer might have to do.

The other issue I have is that I am right on the south coast so may have fewer places to choose from.

I have a couple of trustworthy guys, fully equiped workshop with oven etc that have done work for me on TVR's on many occasions. They have half sprayed my 400SE that I own now. I am very pleased with the results and I have seen full TVR's resprayed there with excellent results. They charge around 1k for a TVR that just needs a respray, to include stripping and prep. For that you get a nice shiny car with paint that will last for a good few years. It is not a doors off, bonnet and boot off job, but at 1k a shot I could have it done again should a prat take a key to it during a shoping trip when parked, or an overenthusiastic shopper collide into it with the shopping trolly. Now, some people may call this job a blow over, but I call it a good respray for the money. Above all, the boys are owners and trustworthy, as I don't leave my TVR with just anyone holding a spray gun.

That does sound a bit pricey..Though it does depend on the paint and the finish you are after...A lot of body shops don't want people to prep as its not always up to standard and then people pish and moan at the finish...Some of the stress cracks will always come back as its a natural flexing of the body..Personally i can't see a problem with prepping it if you know what you are doing...I did Delilah's after a disagreement with a central reservation...

There was some really good advice as always..Shame i was a bit too ambitious....Hopefully it hasn't fell out yet...hehe..In fact i think i did fill the hairline crack and spray on the car...It was only one quick blast on a hot sunny dry calm day....Although my neighbour did have a very slight mist of red on his black Audi....eek..He probably thought his had caught a rash from mine being as he had parked so close...
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I was quoted 8K for a prep and full respray..It was dark pearlescent candy apple red...Trouble was it was £900 a litre and we needed around 5 ptrs..Then prep, Prime , Paint, Flat and polish....

'It is not a doors off, bonnet and boot off job'

I have to say that neither was this price for doors, bonnet and boot off.

Prep work is time consuming to get it right. But that is where money can be saved as long as it's up to scratch. I have no particular desire to do it myself but if it was £6k I think I would need to to keep the cost down.

I also have no desire to have a paint job which is going to look cr*p after a year. I'd rather spend £3 or £4k and have it last many years (or even £6 for that matter). I can save money but I can't buy the time to strip it down again! So I would end up paying for that too!

Spending loads of money on a spray job with expensive paint etc is all well and good, but you have to consider our cars are made of fiberglass and as such tend to crack, shrink and craze in time with the movement, change of temprature etc. Then of course there is the vandalism and car park dings and so on. I'd be too scared to drive it. Personally I'm happy with just a shiny car with reasonable paintwork at a reasonable price. Each person has a different expectation and at the end of the day you have to do what makes you happy. Each to their own.

I agree. Sometimes it makes no sense to anyone but yourself.

I still don't fancy having to stump up £6k mind!!

Yes. They are the ones. Great guys, great job, value for money and above all I can trust them. They take pride in their work and always give me a warm welcome when I go there. Not to mention the cups of tea. My brother had his Rolls Royce sprayed there and they did a superb job. I'm sure that must have cost more than a grand though, but what a finish.

Mines in the spray shop right now getting it back on the 19th.

Previous guy spent £1000 on the paint and it always looked like a low end job. Great from a distance but close up it irritated me.

Doors,bonnet, boot off is £2500

I firmly believe that you get what you pay for.

Are you doing the dismantling and any prep for the £2500?

I agree that you get what you pay for.............unless you are extremely lucky. Or vice-versa ocassionally you will pay a good price and not get your moneys worth. But I think that is generally the exception.

Has anyone done their own prep work? If so, where did you get guidance from. I was open with the guy that I went to saying that I was prepared to do prep work but he didn't give me any guidance.
