Hi Rory,
In my 350i the walnut 'vaneer' seems to be laminated onto a steel plate. I have seen others that have been bonded to a wooden base.
The central pod is easy to get at and remove. Once removed the front plate can be easily removed and looked at.
You could try recovering the panel with that fablon type material in a suitable wood effect or I have seen other that have used Carbon Fibre film (available from people like Demon Tweaks). I have also seen stainless steel panels that have been laser cut from steel plate.
To get the panel re-vanereed can be very costly and may not quite match the top instrument panel (different shades of wood etc).
I believe people like Wedge Automotive were offering this service, you could also try looking in the back of Practical Classics magazine for companies specialising in vaneering.
Good luck
Mike

Rory,
Not sure which part of the country you are from, but I have had my dash panels on a 400se re-venered about 8 months ago by City Polishers. They are at Weston Hills in South Lincolnshire. I'm sure they would do a postal service. Excellent job done, but it may be wise to have all the panels done or you could easily get different shades of timber.
There number is 01406 380984. Cost for 2 panels plus glovebox on 400se approx £160+VAT.

I have e-mailed Leven Technology to see if they would consider doing a dash / center console / door pulls in aluminium for my 350 s2, would anyone else be interested in this as the more interest there is the more likley they would be to do it. I have all the other aluminium bits they do and they are very good.

Sounds great, count me in. The walnut veneer is nice, but too fragile. Aluminium sounds good, it wouldn't be too shiny though would it? I can see the sun catching it and blinding me. But basically yeah I would be interested.

The 'Carbon fibre' effect dash film I saw in a 350 did not look too bad. The car did have a grey leather interior though which helped.
I have covered my door strips/caps with the wood effect vinyl and they look quite good (IMO).
Mike
I have carbon dash and box on my 390SE. but still have the walnut strip on the doors witch I want to remove. Also have blood red leather on the door handles/center console and gear stick.
Can I dye the leather and where can I change the strips.
The tiv needs new carpets and it is going to be black (eventually) so I have to have Black with the grey interia.
Any advice
Thanks
My 390 also has grey leather, with red vinyl around the door pulls etc. The carpets were originally red, but someone shelled out GBP800 and had black wool fitted instead.
I have been intending for over a year to have solid alloy door pulls made: got the metal, just need to bribe a mate to chop them into shape!
The door strips are made in the same way as the 'veneered' dash panels, I think, so for such a small area could you just re-cover them with some carbon fibre effect tat?
;-)

My 400SE has got the instrument panel, centre console and door strips made from stainless steel, looks very tasty
!!! As david says ally would probably be too shiny - the stainless panels have a ground finish which makes them almost matt hence no reflection problems. Have seen something similar on a Tuscan i think it was.
They where fitted by the previous owner who knew someone in the engineering/fabrication business. How much you'd have to pay a firm to have these made though i wouldnt like to say!!! The previous owner also supplied the original panels minus the veener and covered with sticky carbon fibre - looks very naff next to the stainless. Might be worth getting a quote from a local firm to get 'em made from stainless taking your old panels along as a template???

Shiny bits![]()
Would be interested in switch gear, fag tray, door handles, stalks etc. Levens hand brake bit next.
It makes 'em go faster innit
No it slows them down. The only bits of shiny ally that makes them go faster are triple throttle bodies...
Steve
Do they come with neon lights?

The leven handbrake is bl**dy lovely even comes with a shiney button to replace the black one.
I find it does make the car go faster if you press the button in and push down!!
