Hi folks

I am looking to take Mrs O away for a couple of nights later this month - nice drive up through the middle and maybe take in the new extended railway through Snowdonia - and was wondering which would suit us best - Caernarvon or Conwy.

I havent been to either for ages. We will be looking to stay town/city centre and walk to a few bars/restaurants/curry house.

So which is nicer do you think?

Cheers in advance

I would say Caernarfon purely based on the comparative impressiveness of the castle! Conwy maybe closer to more places though, such as Colwyn Bay and Llandudno

From a driving point of view though, id opt for Caernarfon, although the last section of A470 to Conwy is good fun

Cheers both

It's just an overnight stay place for 2 nights. We plan to visit the Castle and do something else whilst up there (highland railway probably). Therefore the town/city is just for a hotel/beer/curry etc. So all we want is somewhere where we can have a bit of a wander of an evening and a choice of somewhere to chow down...

Oblio - get back on the Aston Martin forum biggrin

As my many Welsh friends will verify, try to get hold of details of the Police mobile speed camera(s) before you go into North Wales. They used to post the roads they would be covering in the NW edition of the Daily Post so might be an idea to get the day's edition online? if this is still the case.

The Police speedos are s**t hot.

If you go to Caernarfon, take the road to Llanberis. It has a fair few long straight bits to it. I have a place nearby.

Enjoy yourself, as it's one of the nicest places in the UK, with some of the nicest people, though I do concede that a Scottish accent is preferred to an English one smile

I do a lot of work in South Wales too - beautiful, beautiful, beautiful - an absolutely wonderful part of the world with many many friends.

Enjoy your trip with Mrs Oblio.

Superb place and great food, been a few times now. To be recommended though parking may be on the street.

Have a nose in here.

I can recommend the Bull in Beaumaris too, two nice restaurants and a quality little boozer. If you let them know about your car Im sure they will reserve you a parking space in there courtyard. The owner used to have a few TVR's too.

Graham - listen to the guys above about Beaumaris - it's a gem.

Conwy & Caernarfon Castles are excellent, plus good days out. Shopping in Bangor, good drive through the Llyn Peninsula (Criccieth, Pwllheli, Abersoch), steam train in Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, Snowdonia walks, Llanberis railway.

A beautiful part of the world.

A good drive would be to Bangor via the Ogwen valley & Bethesda. Then back through Llanberis and the Snowden car park too Beddgelert for an ice cream and a little walk then back to Bewts via Capel Curig. Perhaps visit Beaumaris whilst up in Bangor!

I hired some mountain bikes in Betws the other day and did the Marin trail, if thats your kind of thing.....

I'd certainly recommend staying on Conwy, it's far more civilised that Caernarfon and has some great restaurants nearby.
