Traveling west along the A55 we saw very heavy and at times stopped traffic coming towards us on the opposite carrigway heading towards chester. This was for about 10 miles or so. No accidents or road works seen. Was this just people returning after a day out on what was a hot sunny day or is it always like this ? The reason I ask is coming from Ireland if this was normal I would consider diverting to the A5 at Bangor .

It's pretty normal during summer months. As you can imagine, it doesn't take much to cause a proper jam. Usually eases after Conwy/Llandudno and almost completely disappears after Llandygai (A5 turnoff, everyone goes to Snowdonia).

Friday evening the cars are coming to N Wales, Sunday afternoon/eve they all go back the other way.

Sorry, meant to say it was last Sunday evening, the hot one. Thanks for the info, had we been coming from Holyhead towards Chester we would have lost a fair bit of time.
