I've posted this in the holiday section, but thought it might get a more informed opinion from you locals - hope the mods don't mind!

Taking the kids to Snowdonia for a couple of days as they want to go on the mountain train.

I'm potentially staying in Porthmadog - hoping that's a good location?

Also what are the places to eat like in Porthmadog - want to avoid out and out pubs and potentially may be getting back late - so will places still be open (after 9pm)?

TIA.

Porthmadog's a decent half hour drive from the mountain railway (although it's a nice drive) and isn't the nicest place imo. I've only really driven through Porthmadog but didn't see anything I really wanted to stop for.
Maybe you could look for places to stay in Capel Curig, Llanberis, Betws-Y-Coed, nant-gwynant or nant peris, there's good hotels and holiday cottages around there. Plus, all the amazing scenery is right on your doorstep. There's a caravan park (ogwen bank i think it's called) in the Ogwen valley where you can rent nice wooden chalets with your own jacuzzi, also v child friendly.

Pubs and restaurants usually stay open really late and a lot of the pubs are quite remote so they're not full of piss heads out on the lash. Your kids will easily find somewhere they'd like to eat.

Hope some of that has helped you. Have fun!!!

All depends how far you'd like to stay from Llanberis, I am a fan of the Bangor and Anglesey areas, although not as picture-esq I would think it opens up more venues of opportunity for various other days out once you've done the Snowdon visit.

Book the train online before hand - we turned up and missed out because there were queues of people jumping off coaches and onto pre-booked trains. Availability on the day was zero.
