So I paid a year up front.
5 months in I want a refund of what months are left.
I've been trying for 3 months to leave (so 2 months into the membership). Sent emails, letter and a zillion phone calls.
No response. To be honest, it's all rather embarrassing.

I didn't sign any agreement.
There is no cancellation fee.

What can I do?
I figure I'm owed £205 to date.
If he had a bunch of squash racquets for sale I'd just whipped from behind the wall as payment (I jest).

Very frustrated!

Tricky one. Thats why you should never pay a gym membership up front. once they have your cash they are not keen on handing it back. ( i dont think they have to give it back as YOU decided to join for a year)

Citizens advice??
I would simply visit the gym....ask for the manager and talk face to face.
You need to be there in person.....one the phone your just anouther punter sadly

No not really. Insurance is insurance. Insurance and the fitness industry dont work the same.
I would imagine that the sports center/gym in question will ask why your wanting to leave. Saying "because i dont use it" is not the answer.

Maybe if you say your moving cities due to work....ill.....or have an injury. If you say its medical then they may want a doctors line. Seriously.....they will COULD drag it out until your membership expires.

The fitness industry...on a whole makes cash thru people paying and not using the facility

Offtopic. I'm dying for a game of squash. Played for the first in years the other wk with Justin, enjoyed it. Anyone fancy it?

Most gym/fitness places are based on a years membership. Some have notice periods like 2-3 months before you can cancel.

If you paid a year up front, you should have received a better deal than if you were to pay monthly. I doubt that you will get a refund, although they may agree to transfer your membership to a friend or family member.

I own a gym and you will always have some members wanting to cancel, as circumstances change for people. I might apply a cancellation fee depending on the situation. I will always try and help out the genuine enquiries, but it is difficult trying to run your business and be fair at the same time.

If someone pays up front for a year or signs a 12 month contract, most gyms will not refund or cancel. They should however reply to any letters or phone calls. Speak to the owner/manager and see if they are aware of your situation. Good Luck.

If your squash skillz are anything like your track skillz, I have no concern... hehe

As a matter of interest, what are the circumstances that have lead you to want to cancel your membership?

My missus was a member there for quite a while when she worked for Technip and had no complaints.

I'm not a gym / squash person myself so don't have a grasp of what's good and what's not.

Cheers,

Eric smile

I joined as I thought it would be handy for going on my way home from work.
My targets have changed and I could be doing with a heavier gym and a bit of variation.
Dumbbells only go to 20kg, there's no bench (granted there's a smith machine but not the same), no cables, I can max some of the equipment etc. Really it's a fitness gym and there's a big difference between that and a gym to bulk up. I was fobbed off that they were building another gym. Apparently there's not even planning permission and local residents have objected.

I'm just using PH as a platform to rant... smile

So got hold of him.
Made out he didn't know I was looking for him.
Basically said no. I tried to reason with him saying my targets were different and I wouldn't get what I needed from the gym - lack of equipment and weight. Then proceeded to say I could get to wherever I needed to be with the current set up. I replied..."what with dumbells I can max amongst other equipment, no bench etc." Just looked at me blankly.

Apparently getting back to me. I won't hold my breath.

Whatever!
Mook!

Drop something heavy on his foot. Or drop something light on it more frequently smile

I joined the Next Gereration Health Club near Dundee a couple of years ago. They had a 12 month minimum membership period which was ok, but in the small print it said there was a 3 month notice period to terminate the agreement.... but you couldn't do that within the first 12 months, so a sneaky 15 month commitment.

Drop something heavy on your foot and start citing some H+S legislation - no gym EVER conforms with this fully (mainly as the rules are too draconian). They'll do anything you want then! wink

Try and get a membership at Mastrick gym - probably the closest one to Westhill. Certainly with decent weights to move!

I'm on the waiting list for Mastrick having been there a few times with a friend (current member).

Why you joined that "Club" in the first place is oblivious to me... Peter Nicol went to play for England and because he's branded his club "Peter Nicol Squash Club" would be enough to put me off.
