OK, before I get on to the main subject, I'm trying to remember the name of a tea room above what is now the Trinity Centre. As I recall, it sounded like a foreign / exotic name. Any ideas?

Right then ...

  • Isaac Benzie's
  • Watt & Grant
  • Gordon & Smith (grocer at the top of Union Street)
  • The Rubber Shop
... more later.

Maybe showing my youth (ha!), but I used to love Radar's on Belmont Street for icecream sundaes and The Toy Bazaar on Correction Wynd (before it moved and went 'upmarket')...

These were vital visits in keeping me quiet while trawling round town with my mum smile

Reuben Laing - the butcher shop in Woodside.
The Joke Factory (used to be across from Norco, now John Lewis)

What was the name of the ice cream shop on King Street, close to the Pittodrie Bar?

Is that specialist tobacconists still open on King Street?

I think Radars the ice-cream shop started off on schoolhill, possibly even with a spagetti factory, if you cleared a plate you got the next free. Radars on Belmont St was a great drinking / bikey / Rock chick hang out before heading to Ceasers Palace on Crown Street on a Sunday night for more live music.
Mabels cafe in Torry, Sir Laffalots near ship row, Dobies alehouse when they went through the live blues phase. I still miss the Venue, the minkiest, wetest, blackest, stinkiest carpet and watered down lager in town, but it was open til 2 and you could get in pissed after rolling out of the Moorings the back of 12 and watch Dr Feelgood et all live.

C&A's on the corner of Union Street and Bridge Street. I still call it the old C&A's now! Or how about the Toy Bazzar on Market Street?

Ahh...I remember the rubber shop!! I used to spend hours in a electric shop playing a philips console and the first Atari console. I'm sure they had Nintendo Game & Watch machines to.

My Dad, with a business partner, opened that shop when it was originally on Crombie Road in Torry. That was back in the early 70s.

Do you mean the shop that's now a Hairdresser's?
I remember it was called Marchini's (later appeared for a short while in Mannofield).

What about Brian Sherrif's in John Street? Anybody remember the fire they had and the sale afterwards?

I remember that as a student, I complained that the second plate was only half the size...should have seen the waiters face when I'd finished that too then ordered an ice-cream pancake... lick

It was bring your own wine/beer too...

Casa Marcini(sp) was the one on King St and the place on Nelson St was a manufacturer/wholesale place
