Was shut for a month and has re-opened with new management and has been redecorated. Pretty decent place actually, good range of beers and whisky (no Ardbeg though rage )

Worth a go. Not eaten there yet but I'll to give it a go next week.

confused

I take it that's what it was called pre-frankensteins?!

How long ago was that? I've only been in ABZ since '96...

Is it not supposed to be a Scottish themed pub? A Scottish themed pub in Aberdeen. Someone must have been able to think of a better idea?

Ahh another Ardbeg lover!!

My Step-father is a die-hard Ardbeg fan. (Is 'fan' the correct terminology when it comes to whisky?) He even has an Ardbeg beanie hat, whisky glasses & a broach (Badge).

Do you frequent "The Grill" then?

Don't bother. We tried it for lunch the other week and it was shocking. The food was inedible and not cheap. The staff gave the impression that they had better things to do than serve two gentlemen in suits. I won't be passing their threshold ever again.

Now, if you want to make it interesting, let's talk about the establishment a couple of doors down.

My (hazy) recollection is as follows ...

  • Joey Harper's
  • Cousins ... or Sweepers?
  • Willie Miller's
  • The Soda Fountain
  • Beluga
I'm sure I've forgotten one or two and possibly got the order wrong.

Can anyone advise the definitive list?

When it was first opened as Beluga, CT and I worked in Rose Street (Johnstone House) and on average, we used to go there around five lunchtimes a week for Guinness and crevettes. lick

Now, who remembers Pappy Yokum's? ... or are you all of the Radar's era?

Cheers,

Eric smile

i cant stand generic pubs...ABZ is full of em and yep I am a radars generation. but I do remember cocky hunters which is a parody of itself. my idea of a pub is where you can speak without shouting and beer is better draft than in a bottle. and food.. dont get me started, generic menus of the same microwaved/ fast oven sh*t... what happened to actually cooking it! sorry not always a miserable git!!!

frankenstiens opened in 99 i think, they had a millenium countdown remember?

I'm sure it was before that. I remember being there long before my first kid was born in 99. Then again, I'm getting older and senior moments seem to happen regularly.

I was in there a couple weekends ago, it has changed name to McGintys (not sure if that's the right spelling) and it's crap. Not sure what it was about the place I just didn't like it that much at all.

Not a fan of Ardbeg myself, not a fan of Islay's in general.

Give me a good spey-side or I'm loving Talisker at the moment. It has an Islay like taste to it, but without the aftertaste of fireplace.

I remember the Soda Fountain when I was in my late teens. That place used to be bursting at the seams at a weekend. So full you had to squeeze against just about everyone to get to the bar. Typical karaoke style music that everyone sang along and danced to. Must have been one of the first of it's type back then

Oh My God.

I'm sure no-one else I grew up with remembers Papa Yokums and it's bench-seating American-style booths. Was it red or blue leatherette? (i.e. plastic), think it was red. It served proper chargrilled burger and great fries. I was only a kid then but we used to go there at a weekend, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc.

Can you remember where it was? I'm sure it was up Rose St/Chapel St/Huntly St area, but I'm really not sure. Must be the old age setting in.

I can't believe someone else remembers that place. beer

Aye. An 'oil rig' themed pub in Aberdeen......

The charlies management must have been thinking hard when they came up with that!
