Hi, I'm taking my son and his pal down from Aberdeen to Metallica on thursday and have received an email from secc about nearby roadworks. Looking on the net things seem pretty bad around there.

Usually I park in or near the Campanile hotel rather than the official car parks but obviously I'm looking to find somewhere further away to avoid the snarl ups.

I don't know Glasgow very well but I do have a sat nav and we don't mind a bit of a walk rather than using underground or bus.

Any ideas?

Could try the Science Center just across the river either take your chances parking on the street or use their card park which you need to pay. As long as Rangers not playing at home should be fine, although it's a lot smaller than SECC so not sure how full it gets on a concert night. Worst case you can can go across the Squinty bridge to SECC.

If you come in via the West End, try parking near Radford Street/Argyle Street crossing near the Kelvingrove Museum. There should be loads of parking spaces just round from the Goat pub and the mosque, and it's a nicer area than Govan. All you have to do from there is walk along Argyle St, down to PC world and round to the pedestrian tunnel across to the SECC.

I'd say Science Centre is a good plan. The road situation around the SECC is really, really bad right now and I suspect you will get snarled up by it by trying to go to the Campanile too. I'd be tempted to go over the Kingston bridge, come off at that first junction on the South side, then park near the Science Centre and walk across. I've parked there before on a concert night and it was fine.

Another vote for parking at the science centre.

Not sure from your post though Artie, are you going to see Metallica too, or just doing the driving?

Thanks very much for the replies.

We've actually been to the science centre before. I think I'm right in saying it's just a walk over the Bell's bridge to the secc area. I'll just follow exit signs from the motorway right?

So you reckon we'll totally miss the roadworks by going there? And it's a better option for a non-local than Taffer's idea of the Argyle street area?

And yes, I'm going into the gig too. TBH Metallica aren't my favourite band. I've seen them a couple of times before in Edinburgh and Monsters of Rock in the 80s but I think that for a rock band they take themselves too seriously. Too stuck up their own backsides for my liking.

Still I'm looking forward to hearing a couple of the old Burton era classics.

You should try parking on or around Minerva Street (stick it into Google maps) It's just at the otherside of the expressway and right next to the SECC train station.

If you don't want to go then I'd happily take the ticket and you can wait in the pub smile

Hi, just park in ATS garage car park on Finnieston street. I own the India Quay restaurant at the corner and we have free use of this in the evenings for our customers. It does depend on when you get here though, as it does get busy close to concert time. But if you get here early enough you should be fine and you can even pop in and have a bite if you like. beer

Thanks for that. I've noticed your place before...looks inviting.

I take it then that these roadworks are very localised then? I thought we'd have to park quite a bit further away.

I'll be parking at the SECC, although Argyle Street as suggested earlier would be a good idea if you're not going yourself and fancy a few beer

Nope!, unless you like Marathons, Minerva St is the way to go, and easy access to the Low Level if required. By the way, Rangers will NOT be playing on a Thursday night at Ibrox!

Yeah pop in whenever you can. Let me know though and i'll make sure you're well looked after.beer

The road works don't really cause many delays around here as they are managed quite well. However there will be the usual delays getting out after the concert if parked in the SECC car parks.

What a night, even taking an hour to get out of the car park couldn't detract from how good 'Tallica were.

(Machine Head were pish though, which is tragic compared to how unbelievably amazing they used to be)

I ended up parking on Minerva Street...ideal for getting onto the M8 north after the gig. No jams anywhere around here. I'll be using this area again in the future.

As for the gig, well, The Sword were OK, Machine Head were awful [never liked them mind you], and Metallica were really very good - I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Certainly being in amongst it near the front helps.

Now I need to start a thread asking where to park for AC/DC at Hampden.

What a night!

I've seen Metallica a couple of times before but that performance was the best I have ever seen them. Didn't think much of Machine Head and completely missed Sword.

They did play a few of their earlier songs which surprised me - Trapped Under Ice being one of them!

Although I do feel that I was one the few old enough to remember them.. hehe

Was an awesome gig but I have to agree with this. Every gig I've seen them at since they released their latest album there's been less and less from all their other albums, I'm really getting fed up of the blackening stuff.
The heat from the pyro was awesome biggrin
