Hi Guys,

Im moving to Aberdeen from London for work, and was wondering whether you could give me some suggestions of good areas to live in.

Ill be working in Dyce, but want to be based reasonably central.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dyce is the absolute pits to get in and out of, especially if you have to negotiate the Haudigan roundabout as well, unless you can get in for work at 7am and leave at 4pm.

Living centrally, such as the west end, then properties can be nice, but parking is often a pain. Give some thought to Inverurie, it's a town in its own right, and you could get the train.

If you're looking for a flat to rent in the city centre, then budget around £800-£1000 for a decent 2 bed, but commuting and parking will drive you mad.

I live city centre-ish and after dropping my daughter at nursery (Forest Avenue, close to centre) just after eight in the morning it would normally take me another 40-50 minutes to get to work just past the airport. Leaving just before 6 took me the same time to get back.

Got fed up with that so work in Westhill now, which was great until Acergy & Subsea 7 moved in.

Now need to get a contract in the city centre again.

You can find flats for lease on www.aspc.co.uk

As mentioned above, you'll be looking around £800 - £1000 for a decent 2 bed place.

The commute to Dyce from the centre of ABerdeen is awful, thankfully I don't need to do it on a regular occurence.

However if your clever and drive a motorbike/scooter (not in this weather), you could get anywhere from town/dyce in 10/15 minutes.

Remember folks, this guy is coming from London, im sure 30/45 mins in traffic is childs play...

Find a place you can make a home, don't pick a house based on 'how quick you can get to work'.

Welcome to Aberdeen wavey

Looking for somewhere in Bridge of Don would allow travelling to Dyce in about 20 minutes at about 8am going out the back road. If a trip into town is needed then there are plenty of buses when they decide to turn up

I used to live in Dyce and still would if I had not got a divorce, If you work in Dyce living in Dyce makes sense and its only 5 minutes to the city centre by train, the pubs are good too.

www.aspc.co.uk is your friend. pick out some places of interest and we'll let you know our thoughts.

as said above, Dyce itself would be fine, consider also: Blackburn, Kintore, Inverurie, Bucksburn.

There is now a regular bus service from Dyce train station to Kirkhill Ind. estate. Stopping along Wellheads road and the Airport. Long overdue but at least it is now up and running.

Would be interested in this also. As I am moving to Abz with my family and will be working in Altens. Any ideas that would suit families with easy links.

Ellon?
Lawrencekirk?
Banchory?

These are places I thought about, however would be interested in others if there is a train station near Altens?

I moved from London to Aberdeen about 7 years ago. I stayed for a year and then moved to Edinburgh.

I found it to be a cold place, both in terms of people's demeanours, and also the weather which can be bitter and windy. It is OK for socialising, but nothing like London.

I stayed right in the centre of town which was fine.

If you know a few folk up there already it will be fine.

No station near Altens.

Ellon not a good idea for gettiing to Altens, you would be better on south side of the city or in the centre.

So either city centre, or Portlethen, not my first choice, Stonehaven, I used to live there before moving to Muchalls, plenty pubs and a couple of good restaurants, Laurencekirk is not too far out but I don't think there is much there.

Banchory nice and supposedly one of the better secondary schools if that interests you, and OK to get to Altens via South Deeside Road (not that I have to drive it every day, only when it's quiet at the weekend).

We Aberdonians ain't cold its the incomers that are cold therefore you must have been socialising with them.laugh
