Well in my one man attempt to reduce the overwhelming deer population, collected a Roe on the A851 Broadford to Armadale Road near Kinloch on monday morning, in the Volvo. Had just passed a cyclist and was checking over my shoulder/in mirror to see I had cleared him correctly (bus driver training) when two blighters ran over the top of the embankment to my left and straight into the road hitting me on the front corner/side of the wing. I was bloody furious, wife in passenger seat (who had its face bounce of the windscreen in front of her) thought the cyclist must have been hit by it, my son in the child seat was totally unfazed and the guy behind was upset because it got up and ran off so it wasn't going into his freezer. Damage- wing, bonnet, headlight and side/indicator units. Much like the last time when in wifes Pug and a Red ran into it at the Cluanie.
What is wrong with these bloody creatures, they must be able to see you yet still run headlong into you like you weren't there.

ps this is all on top of the fact that on the same stretch of road I have had two broken windscreens in two months due to the poor state of the surface.

What a shame you hit an animal and still manage to blame it somehow.
Maybe you should take out your anger on the gutless shooting brigade who encourage the over population to provide plenty of 'sport' which in turn makes the roads more dangerous for humans and animals.
At least you and your family were ok.

Mr Skyedriver Sir,
Might I suggest one of these,

hooked up to a HUD auto aim,it would make short work of those irritating pests and would also come in handy dealing with the Deer.
Large whiskies all round,
Mines a Talisker

I would suggest that with your level of intelligence, mounting a gun behind the front seats would result in serious injury to driver and passenger - but of course I have issues..........

If you are going to spout get your facts right. The over population of deer was a direct result of the Chernobyl disaster when radiation fall out led to a collapse in the venison export trade (mainly to Germany). This lasted several years and meant that the deer were not harvested by the gutless shooting brigade who are still struggling and failing to get the numbers under control.

One of the unfairest posts I have seen here. If you are a regular driver in the West Highlands this is a real menace - on long fast stretches around say, Achnasheen/Kinlochewe/Lochcarron they can appear from nowhere (they are very quick) and be a real danger.

Have you tried these deer whistles? I have heard mixed success with them but might be worth a go.

Deer whistles
Have heard both sides - one they scare away the animals the other that they scare them and they run straight in front of you.

And please let it be known that I was posting this as much as a warning to others. If you have read some of my previous posts I have warned visitors to the Highlands to be aware of deer. (on the hoons etc). One of the probs about this latest incident was that it was daylight and in an area I had only seen deer once before as opposed to the Cluanie area where they congregate after the pub chucks out. Oh and travelling at 50mph I was unable to avoid it. The Red in 2005 ran into the side of me while I was travelling at 20mph as I had seen others on the road.

Read and re read your post. In both incidents whilst I was still moving, IT hit me.

And I think you will find that there are culls arranged to keep the population down but many animal lovers (which I still class myself as one) keep trying to stop. Would have to say however that I am in ageement with culls where necessary.

Finally the venison is of no use to me as I don't eat meat.

Same here - I have never hit a deer - two have hit me. One on the passenger door, one on the drivers front wing. They have as much road sense as a hedgehog.

Granto has obviously been lucky (or not driven up here much).

Seems that those who have had no experience of things like deer/black faced sheep and tourists(dare I say from south of the border, after clarkson's ticking offeek ) fail to comprehend just how difficult it is to account for their sudden appearance and ability to do the thing most likely to cause problems .rolleyes
