Bright star to the west...

Ok, maybe not, but i was out walking the dog tonight (Aberdeenshire) and i thought it was an aircraft coming in to land, but no it was a star, an incredibly bright one and no other stars were visible at 4.30pm. So, as PH is the font of all knowledge, what is it?

I subsequently spent the rest of the dog walk wondering 'who' else was out there

I thought Venus was a lot closer to the horizon.

Think you might be right, it's certainly due to be its brightest about now, and Jupiter's not supposed to be particularly visible.
